What
is Aledo BroadBand?
Aledo BroadBand is an Internet Service Provider
(ISP) bringing high-speed Internet access to East Parker
County (Aledo, Annettas, Willow Park, Hudson Oaks) area.
We began in 2002 offering "fixed wireless"
technology, and have since expanded our offerings to
include DSL (available all over North Texas!), as well as
dial-up, T1s and ISDN circuits. Sign
up now.
The majority of this FAQ deals with questions
pertaining to our wireless service.
What
is "Fixed Wireless"?
Fixed Wireless (sometimes referred to as Wireless DSL)
is the process of connecting your desktop computer or network to the Internet through the use of
microwave radios using the IEEE 802.11
standard. Aledo BroadBand has several towers in the East
Parker County area, and from them, broadcasts a two-way Internet
signal to customers.
In order to understand Fixed Wireless, it's also
important to talk about what fixed wireless is NOT:
- It does not require a phone line! No
more missed calls. Talk while you surf.
- It does not use satellite! Aledo
BroadBand's signal is not bounced off a satellite
22,000 miles away in space to reach customers.
Because satellite signals have to travel 44,000
miles round-trip, a noticeable lag time (delay) is
experienced while surfing via satellite. Aledo
BroadBand's Internet signal is broadcast from Aledo
and does not have satellite lag times.
- It is not "Bluetooth", and it's
not for your cell-phone. These technologies are
designed for slow, short-range, roaming wireless
connection between devices. Aledo BroadBand's
implementation of Fixed Wireless uses the IEEE
802.11 standard to achieve a 10-mile (or more) broadcast range. It is designed for dependable,
high-speed, wireless connection between buildings,
not devices.

The numbers used are actual
connection speeds based on independent tests.
|
How fast is
it?
Aledo BroadBand's implementation of Fixed Wireless can
exceed speeds of 2.4Mbps (2,400k)
for both uploading and downloading. By comparison,
dial-up modems do not exceed 56k. (Due to Southwestern
Bell's phone configurations, most dial-up modems in
East Parker County are limited to 26k.) Please note: Aledo
BroadBand's speeds vary by location!
Aledo BroadBand can run up to 50 times faster
than a regular dial-up modem. Future upgrades to
Aledo BroadBand's wireless network will allow connection
speeds to reach as high as 6Mbps (6,000k)!
How
much does it cost?
See the pricing page for details. The standard package costs
$249 for setup and starts at $39 per month for
service.
What are the
hardware/software requirements?
Aledo BroadBand's standard equipment is designed to
connect to a computer via the Ethernet port. No software
is required for the computer. The equipment is
compatible with any computer that has an Ethernet port
(Windows, Macs, Linux, etc). For multiple
computers, a router will be required (not included). Additional items are billed separately.
Do you offer email
addresses, web pages and web hosting?
In addition to offering broadband, we offer a wide variety of Internet-related
services.
Email addresses will be "YourName@aledobb.com".
Five email addresses come with each residential account, as well as
20MB of space for static web pages. User web sites are available upon
request and are accessible by going to www.aledobb.com/YourName. Additional
email address are available at a small cost.
For additional services and features, please see the Services
page.
What's
the range for Fixed Wireless?
Although we have customers as far out as 10 miles away
from our tower, the general coverage area is roughly a
5-mile radius
extending from each tower. As a general rule, service is
available wherever an unobstructed view of one of our
towers can be established. Click here
to see a coverage map.
What
about hills, trees and weather?
As a general rule, fixed wireless signals do not penetrate buildings, hills
and thick trees to provide a reliable service. Special
frequencies are required for non-line-of-sight
installations. We are currently providing tree-penetrating wireless in the Deer Creek
(Annetta) area, as well as Willow Park. For
all other areas on our coverage map, direct
line-of-sight to one of our towers is required. If
obstructions prevent line-of-sight to one of our towers, a mast
(pole) may be required. Aledo BroadBand does not install
masts of this type.
Fixed wireless signals function in all weather conditions, including heavy
rain, fog, etc. It is not uncommon for our customers to lose their TV's satellite signal in a heavy storm, but
not lose their
Internet connection. (NOTE: Aledo
BroadBand recommends that all solid-state
electronic devices be kept on a good UPS at all
times).
Where are the towers located?
Aledo BroadBand currently has 3 towers and several relay
posts:
- The Aledo tower is located just
north of downtown Aledo (1/4 mile due east of the
Bearcat Diamond Shamrock on 1187). This tower
coves all of Aledo and most of the Annettas,
including the areas of Fort Worth and Benbrook south
and east of Aledo.
- The Willow Park tower is on White Settlement road,
2 miles due north of Ranch House Rd and I-20. This tower
covers all of Willow Park, Hudson Oaks (north of
I-20), and parts of Weatherford and Springtown.
- The Annetta tower is just west of FM5 on Old Airport Rd.
This tower covers the Annettas, Hudson Oaks and
parts of Willow Park.
- We have several small relay point to provide
better coverage for several hard-to-reach places.
We continue to expand as the market
dictates. These
relay towers will extend coverage beyond the current coverage
map.
